C. NAPIER BELL. Per Press Association* CHRISTCHURCH, January 3. . lirfomathm.was received in Christchttrch to-day of the death at Derby, Tawnnnw. of Mr C. Napier Bell, CE- " From 1878 to 1885 Mr Bell was engineer to the Lyttelton Harbour- Board,- awl designed and constructed the graving dock and patent slip, wharves, jetties nnd buildings. He was also consult ir,g engineer for -the Wellington sewage works, and third valuer for the Xew Zealand Government of railway stock in the South Island. He reported on the construction of the breakwater at Xapicr, making a survey am! general design. He also prepared an estimate for the future extension ;md improvement of the Wellington harix-ur as required by 4he Harbour Board, including a_graving dock and slip. Between ISSS- - he was cngineeer u< the Wcsijxirt H.-.r-hour Board, and was chief resident enpimer for the Xew Zealand Midland Railvav. He also in those years reported on work?; at Tort Stanley, Macquario, Weapon. Dunedin. and on the shinsle drirt at Timaru. From 1893 to 1897 be reported on the damage sustained by the Napier
breakwater, and supplied plain* to improve; the proposed entrance. He was inspector of tilling stock and permanent way from 3528 to 1902. Mr Bell prepared "designs and estimates for various works in An*-' tralia, including Brisbane, Hobart. East Bay neck <«hip canal), raid was one of the Royal Commission to report on the outer harbour at Adelaide. He has been connected with various places in tie colonv; and Australia, where he has made masr fn<-nds. and will be detply mourned by a large circle of friends. * !
