The jnaoy^friends of Mr. Daniel McCaskilt, pained to hear of his death, whjcn'toolcplace last evening. Ha? was laid up for. the. past five weeks by a serious illness.c.but until Thursday last, hopes of his recovery wire entertained. Mr McCaskiil was. : very widely- inowh in Soutli Canterbury, through'his^great'interest iu sporting matters "and the "prominent part he; took in public affairs. He ' was for .■irveraV years:,a -member of the Education Board; of the Winchester School Committed, Temuka- Road Board, Geraldiue Licencing Committee,- and lie \vas. chairman of the Orari River Board.
