gggir ** •> » ——— SHftrSrePmoaUily meeting of the new South School was held "last night. Present: Messrs T. Hawkey (chairman), Stewart, Brown, Cain, Hathaway, Ellis, Irwin, and Sealey (hon. sec). The chairman welcomed the committeemen who were on the committee last year, .and also Messrs Brown and Cain, the new members. He had duly forwarded the householders' resolution re teachers' superannuation. The headmaster reported that tine average attendance- for the month had been 225, showing** a- steady increase, and but for reduced? attendance during Easter week there woulcfchaye been ah average of 230. The "roll number was 247; eight pupils had left andv'eigbt enrolled. Tlie new part of the' ground had been fenced and th& necessary levelling remained to be done. Small boys had broken a window with stones, and tie parents were, to make good the loss. Stationery was required; and some forme needed to be firmly fixed ,to the floor. In concluding he stated that 130 of the pupils, or 52 per cent., were in the infant room. The chairman pointed out that this large number in the infaiit classes indicated permanency .in : the large attendance. —The report was received and; adopted,; the committee resolving to liaye the forms mentioned fixed as desited. The committee authorised ;the dhainrian and ' for cutting down the bank in the new I ground, and ploughing r ; 'laying ' the '' ground down in grass. . The committee nave now the Education Board three "times for an ad- ' flition to the school, and three times the Board, have forwarded the request, which •they considered just, to the Department, only to .meet with a refusal. The chairman stated that he and the secretary had ; brought Mr'Hall-Jones to see the crowded state oKthe school. Mr Hall-Jones wrote to the Department and-.received an uij-,! I satisfactory reply, which he decided not to take as final. . They had not overreached the Board in any way, but had merely ai?ked Mr Hall-Jones to co-operate I with * them; the Board was entirely "'in ] favour of an increase of accommodation. The secretary suggested that a petition j from the householders be drawn up abd presented to Mr Hall-Jones;. it, would strengthen iris hands a- good deal,*' and show that-both committee and- householders were in earnest about it. "A resolution embodying the suggestion was carried, it., being decided to act in thw matter in accordance with the desires of the Board. Ah" account for £1 10s was passed for payment. : v A ballot was held for the visitors for each montfff, and the. meeting terminated.-
