TORNADO AND GREAT LOSS OF LIFE. 'United Press Association—Per Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received 9.50 p.m.. May Ist. NEW YORK, May 1. A tornado destroyed Lareno on the Rio Grande, killing 100 persons, and injuring many others. GREYMOUTH, May 1. A wharf labourer named Petersen broke a blood vessel on Sunday evening and died shortly afterwards. DUNEDIN, May I. While on their way to a fire on Saturday night ten firemen on a reel were thrown out owing to the carriage wheels skidding on the tram rails. The occupants of the reel were more or less bruised. DUNEDIN, May 1. There is every reason to believe that , some bones that were recently found in the Catlins district -are the remains of Dr Schmidt who fifty years ago undertook an expedition from Mataura to the Molyneux through the bush and disappeared. He was traced by the late Mr J. H. Jenkinson to within 500 or 600 yards of where the bones have been f9und. Mr T. Mackenzie, has just paid a visit to the district to investigate the matt«r and

is of opinion that the remains are those of Dr Schmidt, but nothing -was found: to settle the point. He is bringing away some of the remains to submit to the authorities. The rest he and-has companion, Mr Fleming of tibe Clutha " Leader," gathered together and erected a cainv. over them.

About 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, an elderly man named Gardiner, working at one <rf the after hatches, of the steamer Kumara, lost his balance and fell over the hatch combing. He" landed on. the cargo of wool, about sixteen, feet below, Iris shoulder- striking . it. Dr Gabites attended him as soon as possible, and- found that no bones were broken. .At the Jime he was unable to discover any internal injuries. The patient received a very severe shaking and was taken to the hospital. Last evening he was progressing favourably towards a recoverv.

Our Fairlie correspondent writes:—The extraordinary accident to Mr E. Schlaepfer a few days ago, was it "appears entirely owing to some cyclists. Mr Schlaepfer was driving up the Mackenzie Country road towards Silverstream. an acquaintance Mr H. Lorgelly, who w;Ji.,with .him, leading his horse behind, : "when without pre■vious" warning two cyclists overtook , the. •buggy ,and "swept past one on each- side," yelling out as they did' so. The result would' hardly be imaginedtihe led horse, startled, made a frantic leap and landed actually in the buggy witb' three of . its legs the horse in. the shafts bolted; and Mr Schlaepfer and Mr Lorgelly were thrown out, both being, slightly stunned. Mr -Schlaepfer also received- such serious wounds from the'stem- of- his pip e which, was driven in the fall -into the roof of ihis mouth that he isfonly, slowly recovering" from them, and. is out of the doctor's hands. The; cyclists did not stop, to assist nor did they-even go after the bolting horse, and it is : " further reported by a rider that they. behaved: in a similar ; outrageous way on overtaking, him further up the road, and nearly caused him to be thrown from his; horse: when, it bounded suddenly to the side. TSie cyclists who. were young men resident in the district, seem'ea not only to be destitute of ordinarycommon sense, but..either to be -entirely unacquainted with the." rule of 1 the • road " or to be deliberately , disregarding it- ■
