WART) THtNaS-ARE EONE IN' ■ ; ' Tjnited Press- Associatip&—Per Electric-,. vr - ; ' ; : Telegraph—Copyright. , - VIENNA, January 18. Members of. thfc Hungarian Clerical Party threshed and dangerously injured- a number of Liberal candidates. :•,•-• •> Speaking at Pozsony (Pressbnrg) _ on December sth, the Hungarian Minister of Commerce * referred ,-to the British House of Commons in. .the,.following interesting way:—.'"l happened to be.in London in May last, wfcsor. Mr Chamberlain,., the strongest pillar i of. tbe.-.-new Protectionist policy,' developed has ideas in the House of Commons, and. I-, gladly, availed myself of the opportunity of- Searing the celebrated statesman. His speech affected deeply the interests of the Opposition; but he was, nevertheless, listened to with the greatest attention, and was replied to ia the most civil manner, and whenever an opponent 1 deviated from: the question .by a : hair*s breadth he was immediately called, to order by-- the Speaker.i I found such urbiina manners prevailing in the House and the intercourse betweea members as 'to : evoke my- astonishment and envy. What ia the. cause of the strong self-discipline in the House of Commons? It is..due to the fact that the Speaker is provided with sufficient authority, and witty ihs means of
making it effective (great applause)..y : It -has been -said, the. Tespect for law is 'great in 7 England', 'ana "that-it ; is~ a part of English education. ' In reality, 99 per cent, of 'the-.'respect' of/law sught .be interpreted as a dread of the law. •;•' Everybody is afraid to violate the law, knowing it will seize him at once, and' makehim suffer for its violation. In our Parliament, however, everybody can do as -he pleases." The Minister' concluded' his effective speech with the declaration that the Government will not capitulate, but that it will fight out the question of subjugation of obstruction to the bitter end.
