' • The. Timaru Borough Council met in committee on Friday night, to -receive the officers' reports. V . OVERSEER'S REPORT. '■■ Mr A. Beswick, overseer of works and waterworks, reported that in compliance, with the Council's request he :took over on the Ist hist, the general supervision of . all ;bprovigh and waterworks, in terms of a resolution forwarded to him. The street works done or in hand were' described. Orders for- new lamp-posts and lanterns have been given, and the work is in hand. Permission''had been obtained to fix a new lamp, at the corner of the station yard to a convenient telegraph post, which would be in the way of the light from a lamp- . post. As, kerosene lamps are difficult to keep alight and clean in ordinary lanterns, he inquiries at places where kerosene'is 'successfully used. As gas tar is difficult to get in summer, he was laying ,in a stock now as oppoi trinity offers. The contractstj'ljjrgbrokeu metal and shingle have expired, and jfiesh arrangements should be made. Tenders should be called for supElks of timber, pipes, bkieksmithing, arid orse feed. ■ He had inspected the George street sewer several timss, and found that the heavy seas had kept it clear of shingle. Five permits for buildings had. been granted, and two applications were referred to the Council. An addition had been put up without a permit. He would expect permits to be applied for. in all cases before the work is begun, otherwiss he-would refer them to the Council as not in compliance with the by-law. ';■■ The cleaning of the water-race is in hand, and nearly two miles have been completed. The reservoir has been kept well rifled, although the water has been cut off the race.for five days each week. The balance of shipment of pipes from Home has been received, with some further.slight damage. Five new services have been connected, and this and other new work necessitated putting off attending to some leaky,valves and plugs As. instructed he had inspected the cottjages in the Domain and Catherine street, and in each cas« a new range and other" improvements are wanted. Mr Cross, Park caretaker, reported on the work done during the month, and rub-

mitted a list of requirements—(l) A lean-to shed, part of it to louse the mower and other implements, part to serve as a dressing shed for footballers, with a closet attached. (2) A small dray to cart soil to cover clay banks alongside of ponds, and other work always cropping up, and usually left undone. (3) Three or four bushels of grass seed. (4) Trees (say 250), planes, elms, or mixed deciduous trees to plant an avenue along new path round both ponds. (5) A few specimen conifers, not yet/represented in the Park, to be planted in small groups or singly. SANITARY.

Mr J. R. Smith, Sanitary Inspector, reported that he had inspected ten,,streets since last meeting, and had. served twelve notices to have nuisances abated (specified). Eleven other notices had been attended to. Two notices and five certificates under the Public Health Act had been issued. He reported that house drainage running over the clay bluff from the east side of Turnbull street is causing a nuisance on the railway, the wooden boxes and pipes supposed to carry it being out of repair. Some permanent improvement is required.
