THE HOLIDAY.

So .far as Timaru, both borough and suburbs, was concerned, eiose holiday was kept yesterday, and as there was no central attraction, the residents took advantage of the cheap fares on the railways ana had a day in the country. The weather was variable, threatened rain in the morning, but with the exception of a light shower or two and occasional nrL-t. the day was a. good one for a holiday, mild an<i healthgiving. The railway stag had a busy day and Mr Marcus, the stationmaster, informs us that the traffic was greater than on any previous Easier Monday dating his stay here. The st;'.&" were early astir, for at 6.40 a.m. the special left for Christehurch with 180 passenger:.-, most of whom were bound to the Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting. The* 7.20 a\m. for Oamaru had 120 passengers on b:>ai\l. and the 7.25 north 80: while the 8.20 special for Pleasant Point and Fairlie left Timaru with 220, about one-third more than at last Easter. The 11.25 for Temuka put up a record, for 419 p-.issengers went bv it, against 211 last year. The liberal patronage of this train was no doubt in gTeat measure due to the fact that the weather was more settled than in the early monticg and pointed to " set fair." The country gatherings ate fully described below,' so that we-need not dwell on them here. Each and all were a success, and the numerous excursionists apparently apent a very enjoyable holiday.

The fifth annual meeting of the Temuka Bicycle Club -was held yesterday on the asphalt track in Victoria Park. The weather in the early morning was anything but promising, but nevertheless the public showed their appreciation of the class of sports provided by turning' up in such numbers as promised to create a record attendance, and as time went on and the people still came into the grounds, it was soon evident that the crowd would be greater than ever before. The gate money totalled more than £IOO, as against something over £7O last year, so that the number of spectators must hare been considerably more than 2000. The bicycle track was in splendid order, as good as it has ever been, if not better; the foot track was, if anything, a trifle heavy, but not unsatisfactory. There were few items of very special interest in the sports this year: the event which the spectators seemed to look forward to most, nest to the £3O Wheel Race, was the five-mile motor cycle race, for which there were eight entries. all of which pat in an appearance. The motors snowed a considerable varietv, in both appearance and power. Thev all made a pretty good start, but one bv one they gradually fell out. until only "three were left. Some of those that "stopped were badly outpaced, one burst a tyre, of another the driving belt came off; the three which were left were pretty evenlr matched, tHI one of them had "a mishap the exact nature of which could not be readily sean; it might perhaps have been an advantage if the others had had the same accident, as, while it did not verr greatly decrease the speed, it certainly very much lessened the noise. The .two other machines had a tussle which was somewhat exciting, and it was very hard to judge which was the faster, for they seemed to keep almost exactly the same distance apart for several laps. Late in the day, Mr C. *&.- Wood., who had driven out with one of his assistants in hi? new motor car, brought it on the track, and carried Mr T. Gnnnion, the president of the Club, twice round. A refreshment booth, and a. licensed booth were on the grounds, the former being in the charge of Mr Jas. McLean, and the latter in that of Mr P. Lyons, of the Temuka Hotel. The following are the results:— ONE MILE MAIDEN OPEN HANDICAP; £2 and £l.—D. Williams (50yds) 1, D. Taehen (30yds) 2, W. Arnst (scr) 3. Seven riders started, and the race was a close one between six of them for most of the way, the riders being all round the track to the finish, when Taehen and Williams had a tussle for first place, Williams just coming in. After the post was passed the second and third men ran into one another, coming a cropper and damaging the machines somewhat. Time, 2min 22 2-ssec.
