At 1 o'clock the sun appeared after the heavy rain of the morniug, but notwithstanding the combined effect of sun and wind the wicket seemed heavy and a plentiful supply of sawdust was on hand. The attendance was very limited. Warner won the toss and put the Welshmen in, R. Duff and Trumper opening to Hargreave and Trott, four sundries resulting o2 the former's first ball. Trumper commenced freely, but in trying to drive one from Trott sent it hard to Dowson at mid-on.—One for 28. Noble joined Duff and five runs were added when Duff touched ono in the slips, Bosanquet making a biilliant left-handed catch. W. Durf came in to see Noble caught in the slips by Trott without any addition- to the score. Ihree for 03. Sid."Gregory „nd Duff '■llea played carefully. The latter scored a. single and then lifted one high to the off and Johnston after a great run got underneath. Four for 37. Hickron, the newcomer, was clean bowled with his second ball. Five for 38, Trott having secured four wickets for 19 runs. Hopkins' advent led to lively cricket, the newcomer hitting 14 off Trott's over. Gregory quietly reached double figures, then warmed up and overhauled Hopkins. He made excellent leg strokes, but got leg in front to Six for 73. Hopkins lifted Trott high, Johnston making another fine catch in the outfield. Seven for 80. Pye and Kelly, associated, brought the century up, Thompson replacing Hargreave. The fast bowler got Kelly almost immediately. Eight for 104. Howell commenced with his usual fourer?, then hit Trott out of the ground. Howell put one up, but Warner failed to hold it, three runs resulting. Pye, who was playing fiue cricket, made top score. Howell lifted one to the boundary and Jo" mston caught it on the edge of the ground. Nine for 139. Mcßeath added four and then gave Johnston an easy catch. The English fielding was very good. The wicket was kicking a lot .and Pane played Howell on strictlv defensive lines. Warner with his total at 24 had a life at W. Duff's hands, and followed the let off up by some fine clean hitting, fourers following in quick succession. At- 59 Noble relieved McBeath who took Howell's place. Warner, when plaving the bowling with confidence, got leg in front to Noble. Two for 44. Tavlor failed to score, Kelly stumping him. Three for 45. Fane, who was cutting finelv and playing stylish cricket, was joined by Dowson. " At 61 Hopkins replaced Xoble. Pye going on instead of Mcßeath, but the batsmen nlaved out time.
