THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

To the Editor of the " Timaru Herald. Sir, —In your issue of to-day it is stated that at the conference of the Farmers' Unions held at Cliristchurch at Show time " I moved that Id per carcase be given to shippers to provincial ports." This is not correct, and I cannot understand how [ their secretary made such a hash of the [ minutes. What I did move was that | the Government be asked to guarantee London prices for a few shipments of frozen meat to any safe provincial ports in the United Kingdom where there are cold stores, prices to be fired according to grade and date of sale, and that the freezing companies collect Id per head on all sheep frozen, also 3d per quarter on beef, to recoup the Government, for any possible loss." This proposal had "been put clenrlv before the Xorth Cantcrbuiy executive in a circular letter from Mr Wilson, the colonial president of the Farmers' Union, and they had it before them at a former meeting, and passed a resolution to support it. This letter was also read- at the Conference, and Mr Leadley, the chairman, was appointed to go with "us to interview the' Premier, but unfortunately he had to leave Christclmrch before the meeting took place. This was the only scheme laid before the Premier at the interview, and he sympathised with us in our effort to promote wider distribution of our meat, ■ he having seen the necessity of somethingbeing done in that direction while he was in; England, and I believe that he will move in the matter this coming session. I am. etc.. ANDREW CLELAjNTD. Loudoun, 4/2/03.
