MAGISTERIAL.

TIMARU—THURSDAY, FEBRUARY sth, 1903. (Before Messrs R. H. Bowie and E. Holdgate, J.Ps.) DRUNKENNESS. William Cain, who was arrested in the park the previous day by Mounted Constable Lewin, pleaded guilty to drunkenness. Sergeant Warring said that when arrested the man was carrying on in a violent way and as he was in a bad. physical state the sergeant asked that he be remanded for a week for'"medical treatment, to which the Bench. agreed. An elderly woman named Ann' Stanborough, alias Stanley, was charged with being drunk in Stafford street and also with having insufficient lawful visible means of support. Sergeant Warring said that about a fortnight ago complaints had been made about the woman sleeping out in trees at Waimataitai, where she had been making herself a nuisance. He had sent a constable out, but he could not find her. Last night, however, she was found in a helpless state of drunkenness. Evidence was given by Constables Dalton and Lewin, the latter stating that she had been before the Court on several occasions on similar charges. A butcher for Messrs McCully and Jeffrey- stated that he had seen the accused about Maori Hill oh three or four occasions in the early hours of the morning. " , The woman, who was most talkative during the hearing of the case said she had walked 14 miles and had come into town to buy some things and found the shops closed. She said she was poor but honest and' her husband was a hard-work-ing man. She was 70 years of age and was tired after her walk and a little drop of spirits upset her. The Bench said that there were a number of convictions against her and she would be imprisoned for three months. The woman sobbed rather audibly'when the sentence was passed and it was some little time before she allowed the constables to' take her out of the Court TheCtonrtthearaw. . .-
