LABOUR.
THE AUSTRALIAN CONFERENCE. United Press Association: —Per Electric Telegraph-Copyright. Received 9 a.m., February sth. SYDNEY, February 5. The Labour Conference has closed. It adopted a resolution condemning the addition of the title " Lord" to the mayoralty as another link in the chain of objectionable Imperialism in every way opposed to the best interests of the community. THE ARBITRATION COURT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 5. Replying to a deputation, of ■ Trades Unionists, who complained of the administration of the Arbitration Courts the Premier promised to make enquiries as to the cause of delays. A radical change seemed necessary, and he was sorry to hear the.
expressions of opinion concerning the Court which he had heard lately. The appointment of a Supreme Court Judge as President of the Court, it was thought, would jive the office and the whole thing a superior position, and be better for all parties concerned; but it seemed now that it was instead going to drag and bring ! down the Supreme Court itself. If this ! went on he thought it would be a matter for the Legislature to take into consideration. He would say. without hesitation, that} he did not thick the President of the Court would desire to act partially or do anything unfair or unjust. If employers and unionists were continually being narrated by anything done in administering the Act that was never intended by the Legislature, he would take good care to see that it did nc: go on. With respect to taking proceedings for breaches of award, he thought this should be done by someone outside the Unions, and that the Government would have to appoint some outsi :e authority, neither Unionist nor empli.ye:, nor under the control of either.
