F?r Press Association. AUCKLAND. March 7. Arrived—T.rn.-.ar.a. at Motuibi Island, from Sydney, at 11.30 a.m A XE\T CURRENT. A remarkable action of the South Pacific waters was noticed oz the last trip of the Moaca from Sydney to Vancouver. The officers of the vessel are at a loss to explain the phenomenon, and say that it is. something which will have to be cleared up by scientific men. It is nothing less than ac entirely new current in the Southern waters —a current which ias until now been unknown to navigators in that part of the hemisphere. The earrent was a westerly to south-westerly one, and was experienced fully six or seven degrees further to the southward than has even been kiown before. The equatorial current- extend from lCdeg. X. to 2deg. S. latitude. Whe:> the Moana was about 9deg. S. latitude it was noticed that she - did not keep her course. It was many miles too so::n for the equatorial currents, and for a while the officers were at a loss ,to determine tho cause, a.-: there had not feeen cry wind to exert any unusual influence on the vessel. Observations of the •water were made, with the that a -well-defined westerly to current was discovered. The current was running at the rate of about a knot an Jiour. Wnat caused the new current to orsake its appearance, is a mystery to the ofccers of the vessel. All they can. testifyto is the presence of the current. There was no diminution of the correnS at the nsual degree where it makes its appearance, and the currents seemed to be about as usual in northern latitudes.
