Per Press Association. GISBORNE, March 7. A public meeting to-night re the testimonial to Mr Seddon passed a resolution in support thereof. The Mayor (Mr Towrleyt wh » presided, Mr L. Rees, and Mr R. N. Jones spoke warmly in commending the Premier's actions. A committee was appointed to cany out the object of the meeting, the Mayor being appointed chairman and Mr John F. Sheridan secretary. PALMERSTON NORTH, March 7. At the request of the Chamber of Commerce, the Mayor has agreed to call a public meeting for Tuesday next in connection with the Seddon testimonial. The drought has broken up by a fine rain, worth thousands of pounds to the district. WELLINGTON. March 7. The report of the Royal Commissioners, ■who investigated the charge made by a prisoner named Edward Wilson against Warder Murphy, of Point Halswell prison, has reached the Minister of Justice. The report entirely exonerates Warder Murphy from the charges brought against him. Sir James Prendergast has been appointed a director of the Bank of New Zealand.

HOKITIKA, March 7. A large number of delegates for the Fire Brigades Conference arrived to-day, composed chiefly of North Island representatives. The remainder Trill arrive to-mor-row. Thewisitors attended the Agricultural Show this afternoon, and will take part in a torchlight procession and fireworks display this evening. There will be a church" parade on Sunday morning. The conference will sit on Monday ingDUNEDIN, March 7. At a meeting at Port Chalmers it was decided to join in the national purse movement to the Premier, and a committee was appointed to canvass for subscriptions. Bill Martin, the cyclist, will make his first appearance in the colony on .Saturday. Martin has trained* regularly. Though mild to-day he complained of the cold. The weather does not look promising for the sports meeting to-morrow.
