A RATING CASE.
To the Editor of the " Timaru Herald." Sir,—You have given'publicity to. the passing of a resolution of the 'Levels County Council, by which it is proposed to recover rates from me for a house and land at Waimataitai, the occupation of which I gave up over three years ago-. Perhaps you would kindly give equal publicity to my statement- that the Council's clerk was informed of the change of occupancy three years ago; that again, on sending me a rate notice, he was informed of his mistake over two years ago, and yet the requisite notice of the alteration in occupancy was- not forwarded to this office. An attempt is now being made by the Council, for reasons best known to the members themselves, to take advantage of the fact of my. name being on the local roll by a blunder, and to demand rates from me.' Possibly it. was only intended to try a quiet dig at me, but if business is meant, I hope the Council will carry out its threat of taking legal proceedings. I am. etc.. A. P. O'CALLAGHAN. Christchurch, Feb. 20th, 1902. '
