The s.s. Mamari arrived at Lyttelton from here at 6.15 o'clock yesterday moraing. The s.s- Upolu arrived trom Oi'inarn and Dunedin at 11 o'clock yesterday mcming -with 175 tons of general cargo. She loaded 350 tons of produce and left for Akaroa. Lyttelton, Wellington and New Hymouth in the evening. The steamer Para has put in at Barbadces so damaged that she cannot proceed to England. She reports that on the voyage from Jamaica to Barbadoes the reserve supply of chemicals employed

in reducing the temperature as a means of * preserving the •fruit on board, exploded, tiffing Mr Lawton, the inventor of the process, and two others, and injuring the captain and several of the crew.
