America has slightly increased the countervailing duty on Austro-Hungarian sugar. It is announced that holders of the meat contracts are forming an Imperial Supply and Cold Storage Company, with a capital of £1,000,000. i Received 11.11 p.m., January 31st. The Bank of England returns show the stock of coin to be £34,326,000 ; reserve, £25,558,000; proportion of reserve to liabilities, 49.46; in circulation, £2,883,400; public deposits, ' £10,664,000; other deposits, £40,782,000; Government securities, £17,279,000; other securities, £26,974,000. Consols, 94§. Victoria 3£ per cent, stock, 104j. New South Wales 3£ per cent, stock, 105. Western Australian 3j per cent, stock, 102j. Other stock quotations are unchanged. The -wheat, markets are quiet. The Continental market is hardening, and the American irregular, prices closing firm. Business in cargoes is neglected. Victorian near the coast is quoted at 30s 3d. A South Australian January-February shipment has been sold at 29s 9d.
The copper market is active and excited ; spot, -54|-; three months, 54|. Tin is firm; spot, 107; three months. 104.
The Bradford wool market is hardening ; common sixties, 19-i; supers, 20|> At the wool sales the market was less animated, and faulties were somewhat easier. Other sorts were firm.
The demand for butter is improving, and the market has an upward tendency. Colonial is quoted at 104s to 106s, some are aski*- for 108s ; the Danish is recovering at 109s to Ills, The Tongariro's cargo arrived in good condition. Cheese is firm; prices are unchanged. Rabbits are in strong demand at 9d.
