LONDON, January 24. The Chinese Emperor granted an audience to foreign Ministers, who were struck with his pathetic appearance, physical weakness ant! "profound melancholy. Sir Ernest Satow informed the Emperor that King Edward sincerely desired that the independence and integrity <;f China should be maintained intact; that the prosperity and happiness of the Chinese should be fostered by the Emperor's enlightened rule, the removal of obstacles to a free exchange of commodities und better intercommunication. Prince Ching acted as spokesman. The Emperor remained silent as an automaton. The Dowager wiu invisible behind n screen in the audience chamber.
General Yunglu's daughter is betrothed to the Emperor of China's brother. The Yangtso Viceroy declares that Yunglu held the keys of the Imperial arsenal, preventing modern guns being used against the foreign Legations at Pekin, and he saved the European;; in'the Yangtze provinces by telegraphing to the Viceroys to disobey' the edict ordering their destruction.
The "Daily Telegraph" says an outburst in China is promising. Yuanshika. Governor of Chi-Li. is friendly to Britain, and is the strongest ruler China has bad for years. The Rev. A. Favier, Roman Catholic Bishop at Pekin, is apprehensive of attacks on the missions and converts in Mongolia, as the result of Prince Tuan's incitement to avenge his son's rejection as heir apparent.
