The course was'in fair order in the straight but heavy at the back. The sum of £18.096 was put through the machine beine £9084 behind the corresponding day last vear. Results " JANUARY HANDICAP. . Goldenmere , 1 Fashion 2 Indian Shot 3 Also started, Redonbt. Fashion was in front on entering the straight, but Goldenmere cut him down in the run home, and won hv half a length. Dividend. £ll9s. ' ELECTRIC HANDICAP. Torowai 1 r* Te Taiha 2 Float 3 Also started—Gold Spur, Ringlet, Rebel, Shrapnel Shell and Avrdale. Te Taiha led until reaching the distance when Torowai slipped up on the inside and won by iali a length. Dividends, £4 2s 6d and £1 18s 6d. RACING CLUB HANDICAP. The Shannon 1 St. Michael 2 Cannie Chiel 3 All started. Shannon was in the van throughout and on entering the straight came away winning by three lengths. Dividends, £5 3s 6d and lis 6d. JUTE NILE HANDICAP. Achilles 1 Golden Vein 2 Orloff -... 3 Also started —Ascension and Apprentice. Achilles led nearly the whole way, winning easily by two lengths. Dividends. £1 16s and £1 2s 6d.

WELTER HANDICAP. Battler 1 Quiltina 2 Fashion 3 Also ran—Motcr, The Hempie, Jewel Gun and Forest Oak. Battler led throughout, and won easily by three lengths. Dividends. £5 3s 6d and £1 Bs. WELLINGTON STAKES. Cruciform 1 Canteen 2 Greek Maid 3 Also started—Optimist, Ringman and Dirk. Won easily at- the finish by half a length. Dividends, £1 os 6d and £1 14s. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. Indian Queen 1 Glenogle 2 Torowai 3 Also started, Goldspfcr. Indian Queen lad almost the whole way, but in the straight was challenged by Glenogle, who was only beaten off bv a short neck. Dividend. £3 Is. HACK HANDICAP. Cure 1 Pure Silver 2 Waitoa 3 Ali started but Gipsy Jack. Won easily by two and a half lengths. Dividends, £lO 7s 6d and £3 17s. The stewards discussed Cure's running on the first day, but took no action. THE GORE RACES. INVERCARGII.L, January 23. The second day's races had no improvement in the weatner. The attendance was fair. The totalisator put through £2116, as against £2184 for the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £4502, as against £4472.
