In the House of Commons, Mr Walton's amendment to the Address-in-Reply, that ft is essential to safeguard British commercial and political interests in Persia, was withdrawn, after Viscount Cranbourne had explained that the policy was to maintain the status quo in Asia and preserve the integrity of Persia, and that it was impossible to abandon British ascendancy in the Persian Gulf and the southern provinces bordering upon India.
