In the House of Commons, the King's Civil List was carried by 307 votes to 58 votes. Excepting Mr Labouchere, Mr John Burns, Mr Keir Hardie, and six Other Radicals, the minority were entirely Nationalists.
Received 12.41 a.m., May 11th. The newspapers publish columns of cables descriptive of the opening of the Federal Parliament. All comment in a tone of proud affection echoing His Majesty's good wishes. The "Times" predicts that the consequences of Australia's political expansion will be far-reaching and manifold, and will inevitably be followed by a corresponding expansion in' other spheres.
