Jones. . ] The 31st annual sports meeting of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club opened on the athletic grounds yesterday. The weather was bleak for the most part of the day, there being an hour or two, however, that was very pleasant for an out of door gathering. The attendance was about up to the usual standard of a first day, when not being a holiday the general public take no interest in it, and only the members and their friends put in an appearance. The ladies, as is usual at the May sports, were in the majority, and young and old among them took the liveliest interest in the events of a comparatively short programme. The sports started at a quarter to 12 o'clock, J and the dozen events on it (there were | 14 in the programme, but two were cut j out) were run through by 4 p.m., one hour adjournment for luncheon being Jr

eluded 'in the time named. The sports taken as a whole were very good, and a really pleasant time was spent, but the fields of competitors, with two exceptions, were lamentably small in numbers. The •ground was in very fine order, the cinder path being fast and hard, and the grass track for hurdling was level and neat. The hammer-throwing and stone-putting having. Toeen cut out, a start was made with the 100 Yards Flat, which was run in two heats of three starters in each. The starting in both was good, Anderson winning 'the first easily in 11 l-ssec, and Eraser the second in Usee, also comfortably. In the final, Eraser won, handsomely, coming away fast from the ChristchuTch representative in the last 25 yards, and winning fcy a good yard. The high jump was a pretty but brief display; and the Half Mile Flat which followed was leisurely run till. 250 yaTds from home, when Pentecost, who had made all the pace, showed the fine form he was in by bolting and winning easing up by/nearly a dozen yards. In the Mile "Walk Handicap Rich had na difficulty in winning -easily. His style is peculiar, Tsut if not pressed too hard he is a first-rate walker. . In the 120 Hurdles Bowie took off short at one hurdle and paid the penalty. Bad he not done so, the finish would have been close. The best finish of the day was in the 440 Yards Flat; it was a great go from start to finish, and was just won by inches. In the Long Jump Mendelson was much too good for his companion; and in the Steeplechase, though supposed to be made more attractive byibeing a handicap, there were only four starters out of 12 nominated, and the result was never in doubt. Simpson well'deserved dhis win,' and the ladies had the satisfaction of seeing, a fine exhibition of running by .him. He ,. a " d

Sealy, who ran second, were cordially cheered on receiving their beautiful trophies from Mis Tripp's hands, and the ladies of the ■elub came in also for a very hearty round of cheering. In the 250 Yards Flat Anderson put in a very fine performance. He jumped, into, a good P os *° n

from tiie start, and was never troubled, coming home •xceedingly f ast and winning with yards to spare. The 200. Yards Boys Handicap was taken part in by nine lads, and the limit lad just lasted long enough to get home with a bare yard to spare. In the. final event, the '6OO Yards Handicap, Pentecost once more showed his superiority. He 'had all beaten but Flewellen at the turn for home, and the latter showing a somewhat poor spirit by running off 40 yards from the tape, Pentecost had an -easy run home. With the points he has -so far gained, it will be a hard matter to keep this very fine run-

ner from carrying off the championship? All the officiated usual did excellent .work', and things went very smoothly from start to finish. We have once more to thank the honorary -secretary for his kindness to our representative. During the afternoon a delicious tea was provided and dis L pensed by Mrs Budd on behalf of the club, and very much enjoyed.' The following are details of the several events: —
