FATAL ACCIDENT AT WAIMARE.
A report reached Waimate on > Wednesday morning that Mr John Cochrane, of Waituna, farmer, had been killed by a dray accident on the previous night. The report was found to be true. The fact* as known up to the time of reporting are that Mr Cochrane's team, two horses and a dray, arrived at his homestead -at about 9 o'clock in the evening. As there was no sign of Mr Cochrane or any other person with the horses, Miss Cochrane went in search, and found her brother lying dead on the road abou<j a mile and a half from his house at Waituna, near Mi- William Meyer's farm. ■ Deceased was returning with a. dray loaded with coal, and other matters from Waimate, and rifc is believed that he fell off the front part of the dray or load, and was run over by the dray wheel. police, after ascertaining the fact,. communicated with .the District Coroner, Major Keddell, and his being unable, to attend, Mr J. Sinclair, J.P., acting as Coroner, summoned a jury to attend at Waituna yesterday afternoon to 'hold an inquest, the result oil which was unknown at time of the mail closing. So far as is known no person was in company with deceased when he met Ui9 death. Great sympathy with Mrs Cochrane, the widowed mother of daceased, and with the members of the family, is felt by the people of Waimate and district, where the family have resided for more than: thirty years. Mr -Tolm Cochrane, an old resident here, was killed yesterday evening by being thrown out of his dray when returning home fro m town - At the in( '" est to ' day tho medical evidence showed that deceased's skull was fractured.
