PRESENTATION TO MR HOLE.

The employees of the Timaru Borough Council assembled in the Fire Brigade room at the Council Chambers at noon yesterday, for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr Hole, the retiring Mayor. The following address -was read: Borough Council Office, "Timaru, May Bth, 1901. "To John Hole, Esq., Mayor of Timaru. "Dear Sir, —On the eve of your retirement from the Mayoral chair, -we, the employees of the Timaru Borough Council, desire to assure you of our high esteem and respect, and thank you for your gentlemanly and considerate treatment during the tenure of office as Mayor of Timaru. We earnestly hope that long life, health, and prosperity may ever attend yourself, Mrs Hole, and members of your family.—Your obedient servants, "Philip Dale, M. F. Dennehy, C. MeDougal, R. O'Brien, D. Shine, H. W. P'arfoot, G. Cross, W. Parker, A. Beswick, J. Holland, Peter Hunter, John Courtney, T. Yel; land, W. Maben, Michael Sugrue, and Edwin Lough." A very nice silver cake dish was then presented to Mr Hole. Mr Dale,, foreman of works, said it was a small token of the respect which' the employees felt for Mr Hole.' It had been a very pleasant -eighteen inonths for all of them. The men had' worked willingly, and could not have done" better. He hoped the time would come when-they would have to work under him again.

Mr Beswick endorsed what Mr Dale had said, and Mr Lough also spoke of Mr Hole's good qualities. Mr Hole said he hardly knew how to thank them. He was sure he did not deserve it. He had found them all good men, and was always satisfied with them. He hoped the same relationsship would exist- with the incoming Mayor as had existed with himself. He would always prize their little present. Mr Hole addressed a few words of praise for each of the Departments. He did not believe the. remarks that were expressed about things' not being done right, and as far as the foreman of works was concerned he had, done his best. Mr Dale had a borough to look after, and he claimed that: they should have more consideration for him. He thought things always, came out right in the end. He thanked them again; for their present. Mr Hole's health was then drunk.'
