Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 8. The s.s. Rotoiti arrived at 10.50 p.m. yesterday from Onehunga, and sailed at 1 a.m. for Wellington with the' inward San Francisco man. WELLINGTON, May 8. Sir James Prendergast leaves by the Sonoma for London to attend the conference on the subject of setting up-an Imperial Court of Appeal. The Commonwealth has appointed a delegate, but his name has not been mentioned in the communications received in New Zealand. The return of the Maori population of the colonyj as shown by the late census, is now complete. It shows the native population in the North Island to be 40,611, an increase of 3511; South Island 2028, a decrease of 296; Chathams, 212, an increase of 13; total increase, 3228. The shopkeepers in Cuba street, in consequence of the Governor having so restricted the route of the Royal procession as to leave that thoroughfare out, have protested to His Excellency, who now states that should the reception committee desire it Cuba street will be included in the route.

Mr J. G. W. Aitken was to-day reinstalled as Mayor of Wellington, and Mr G. Frost as Mayor of Melrose.

CHRISTCHURCH, May 8.

Mr C. Coleridge Farr, who is superintending the erection of a magnetic observatory at Christchurch, has received a letter from Sir Clements Markham, President of the Royal Geographical Society, asking for information concerning the observatory, and whether it will be in working order when the Antarctic expedition arrives in Australia next October. He indicates the possibility of Lyttelton being made the base of operations instead of Melbourne. • DUNEDIN, May 8. Mr G. L. Denniston was installed as Mayor this afternoon before a good attendance of ex-Mayors. ' The Premier was also present. The Council passed a resolution thanking Mr Chisholm, the retiring Mayor, for the very successful manner in which he had carried out his arduous duties during 17 months including the despatch of the Contingents and the receiving of returned troopers.
