THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL
Per Press Association. ONEHUNGA, May 7. The Rotoiti sailed at 6.30 a.m. for New Plymouth with the southern portion of the inward; San Francisco mail. WELLINGTON, May 7. * The Rotoiti, with the San Franciso mail, is expected to reach here to-morrow afternoon. The southern portion will be shipped by the Tarawera, sailing for Lyttelton at 5 o'clock. The San Francisco mail agent reports that until) further notice the mail, steamer will leave San Francisco at 10 o'clock on Thursday morning instead of on Wednesday evening. The reason given for the change is that the steamer runs too great a risk in leaving San Francisco at night. The date of arrival of the steamers in Auckland has not been altered, but in future the steamers will probably arrive in Auckland on Monday afternoon instead of in the morning. On the 3rd inst. the piston rod j of one of the low pressure cylinders broke, and the vessel ran with both engines compounded since.
! The Postal Department states'that the Ventura's trip has not beaten all previous records as claimed. Her steaming time was 429 hours, whereas the Sierra's best voyage was 411 hours.
