Captain Edwin advises :.—SLuMg N.E. to N. and W. winds, glas3 fall,, tides making, and weather wanner. The attendance it the primary schools in Otago in 1900 was 20,150, a smaller number than/in any year since 1882. Mr Fred Cross, of Fairlie,. has. written to a friend in Timaru to say that Trooper Charley Cross is not among the returning troops on the s.s. Tongariro. Trooper Cross wrote on the 28th March- that he was sailing for London, and would come on later to this colony. The Napier "Telegraph" is convinced that there must be some mistake- in the census tallies of the Borough, because nearly the whole of the decrease of population is allotted to the south ward,- the ward in which there has been a great deal of house-building during the past five years, and where the attendance at a- side- ichool has hugely increased. A general meeting of the- Builders' Association was held last evening., at Werty's, the president, Mr Pringle, presiding. Matters were brought forward and discussed for the general welfare of the - Association. The secretary was requested to communicate with other centres for information on certain subjects. A was appointed to see about rooms for- the location of the Association. New- members balloted for and elected, and several buildera were nominated for membership. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Werry for the use of the room. The - meeting elosed with a notification that the next meeting would take place the first Thursday in June. The annual meeting of subscribers to the Waitohi Library was held on Monday, Mr Cunningham occupied the chair, and there was only a small attendance.-- The regorfc .showed a credit balance =of £27 3s. 6d, including the Government. subsidy, of £6 4s Id; £ls 5s had been spent on books and magazines during the.. year. , Ths committee regretted that the .library. | had not been supported as it. merited. ; Mesars Cunaingham and Mclntyre were re--elected oVir-man and secretary respectively, land Messrs J. Hughes, W. Moore, J. B. i Peaise, W. Pearse, J. Orr, J. Canmell, i and R- Williams -were appointed a oomI mittee. It was resolved to renew.> the. i subscriptions to several magazines, and to i spend £8 on new books. It was arranged ita hold a meeting on Monday, the -6th ihat., to choose the books, and members '! were requested to send in the names of amy books they may wish to be procured.

The Timaru Pigeon Flying Club got off the first race of the season yesterday, ,a. race for young birds from iPalmerston Saiith. The sea had gone down so much yesterday. morning that one could go along the breakwater without fear of a ducking. . An. inspection of the damage done _to . the outer arm shows a dismal amount of,.rips, and gashes. The .ugliest is just, beyond the curve, where the outer third...of„.the width has been torn up. The remainder,, however, looks solid and setture. Further on, a huge flaka.,of concrete .has been, ripped off, including some of the., top.. t d. the monolith, as. far over as the. inside, crane track, part ®f which has disappeared,•. rails and altogether. The. rubble thrown over a little beyond this, is still., visible, so that ..it has not been carried, away or dragged*ant. The shelf mustosbe;. unsupported to i- considerable extent aboutv, that spot, judging by the fine that spout up the vent-holes.. the shelf. As the boat emerged from tite Heads they were both, on the low® deck near the which a few minutes later was smashed to splinters, -watching the waves beating- am the rocks. There was only one 0.-jher passenger ynd a steward on deck ; the other passengers were either in bed, at tea, or in the social hall. Suddenly the steward caught Mrs M'Kee by the arm and called out, " Come in, quick!" and all four rushed into the sodal hall, and made fast the doors just in time to avert being swept overboard. The huge wave thundered over the boat, and there was a rapid descent, not unlike tho descent into a deep coal mine, minus the sense of security. After the frightful crash there was heard a rush of water ill the saloon, and several people cried out "We are on the rocks !" In the social hall men and women stood or sat in an attitude of terror, fearing the ship would instantly go to pieces. The .next few minutes were a time of terrible suspense. An hour later the sea went down, and the remainder of the passage was made in almost smooth water.
