THE TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The weather yesterday was dull a-d overcast in the morning, with the wind backing and filling, and a low glass threatened a storm. The wind got stronger as the day wore on, and sharp showers fell shortly after noon, culminating in a heavy downpour at five minutes past 3 o'clock, and putting a stop to play for the day. TJp to the hour named the games had been kept going with vigour, and though the wind across the courts in the morning made excellent play almost an impossibility, some good tennis was witnessed. Only ona game in the championships was played yesterday, that between the Waitohi acd Timaru players named below, and with the score badly against him in the first set, T. Orr played a plucky game in the second.- He has played a very consistent game all through,-and his club-mate (Pearse) is in fine form also. In the ladies' handicap singles, Miss Fooks (Ashburton) played well yesterday, but will hare a hard task with Miss Tennent today. In the final of the men's double, B." C. aisd B. T. All other finals should be well worth seeing, and as the grounds will be free to friends of members of' the clubs engaged, there should, if the weather is at all favourable, be a good attendance to-day. Luncheon and afternoon tea were provided yesterday, and the ladies had a good many callers at the refreshment marquee. The club desire to heartily thank the president (Mr W.
