The wife of Archbishop Samuel Williams, sister of the present Bishop of Waiapu, and a daughter^ the late Bishop, died suddenly this morning, it is supposed from rheumatism of the heart J aged 74. WELLINGTON, November 24. Seven Chinamen were charged at the Magistrates' Court yesterday, with threatening and attempting' to murder two compatriots, on account, it was alleged, of the latter's assumed connection with the recent police raids on Chinese gaming houses. After a long hearing, the presiding Justices announced the case as being simply a dispute between two tribes. In order to ensure connection with a fast steamer leaving New York on December 29 th, it has been arranged to despatch the Alameda from Sydney two days earlier than the advertised date under the new timetable. It is hoped that it will be possible for her to leave Auckland on Thursday, 6th, or early next morning. The position of relieving Magistrate has been offered to Dr McArthur, the Auckland Coroner. In consequence of the agitation which has arisen through the treatment of Lillywhite m gaol, the Justice Department has decided to frame new regulations which shall provide different treatment for persons awaiting trial from those under sentence. The Minister of Justice has received a petition from Christchurch, asking that Mrs Long.who was sentenced by Justices to 14 days' imprisonment for ill-treating her step-children, may be released on her own recognisance pending an application to the Governor that the sentence be remitted. The Minister replied that this cannot be done, but he has instructed Mr Beetham, j S.M., to report fully on the case after con- j saltation with the Justices. The Wellington Wharf Labourers' Union have again filed a dispute with their employers with the Clerk of Awards. The . demands are the same as before. ! Captain Cooper, of Wellington, has retnrnd from Home after arranging for the working of the Chatham Islands sponge fields. One of the English sponge firms has undertaken to equip the first expedition on condition that the first take be sent to it. The expedition will start about March next. An inquest was held to-day on the body of Anne Maria Mitchley, 51 years of age, who died m the hospital. There was a suspicion that a blow m the abdomen which she had received from a man she was living with had more or less directly caused her death, but it was not supported by the evidence, and the Coroner directed the jury to that effect. DUNEDIN, November 24. The Otago representatives at the Educational Institute's annual conference will be Messrs W. Barnett, Flatman, R. Hodge, Jeffery, Mac Donald, Waddell, and Smith, and Miss Hooper. Mr Davidson, of Mornington, attends as a member of the Exe•ntive.
