MELBOURNE V. SOUTHLAND.
Per Press Association. INVEROARGILL, March 21. The Melbourne eleven began a match to-day against a Southland fifteen. There being no half-holiday and a considerable exodus to Dunedin. together with a moist dull day, the attendance was not large. Southland won the toss and took strike. Howden was taken m the slips off the first ball m the match. Barnes was badly run out for 6. Best was the only batsman to get beyond units, his score being 20. The innings closed with the total at 60. Cave took 9 wickets for 23, Trumble 4 for 30. The visitors have 7 wickets down for 201; Mcllwraith 27 and Jennings 15 being the not outs. Trumble made 21, Mailer 65, and Aitkin 27. .
