Mr George Gordon, the well-known scenic artist, is dead, the result of a fall from a tram. Received June 13th, 10 a.m. IN BANKRUPTOY.-BEVERE SENTENCES. Adelaide, June 13. Judgment was given to-day m the insolvency case of Harrold Bros., merchants, Adelaide and London. The case had been before the Court for over two and a half years. An enormous amount of evidence was taken showing a total deficiency of £343,000. Mr Commissioner Kussellj| after dismissing the trustees' charges on technical grounds, dealt with the charges of fraudulently obtaining large suuia of money to carry on the business of the firm. He said that Arthur L. Harrold, one of the partners, had gambled m the fullest sense. He had plunged for a fortune ; and borrowed on all sides without any reasonable expectation of being able to make repayment, Mr Russell scathingly commented on the offences against commercial honour. The three insolvents were not equally . culpable. Leonard Harrold, who was m London, was m a different position to the others. The question of granting his certificate would be dealt wtth subsequently. Earnest Egeston Harrold, one of the brothers m Adelaide, knew the condition of the firm, but was greatly controlled by Arthur. He would have his second-class certificate suspended for two years, and Arthur would have, his second-class certificate suspended for three years : and on the charges proved against him, he (Arthur) would be sentenced to two years' hard labour. The solicitors for the insolvents intend to appeal. Received June 13th, 10.15 p.m. THE DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM. Brisbane, June 13. The fire on the Duke of Buckingham was extinguished after flooding the hold. Received June 14th, 12.25 a.m. FEDERATION. The Federal Bill has passed the Legislative Assembly and been read a first time m the Council.
