TOWN & COUNTRY.

— • — f Captain Edwin advises:—" Glass fall 1 a little ; tides decrease ; weather cold. We are informed that the benefit social which was to have been held m St. Mary's schoolroom to-morrow evening is unavoidably postponed. The treasurer of the Catlow Funi, Mr j W. J. Tennent, has requested us to t acknowledge the receipt, per Mr Martin Cole, of the sum of £10 4s 6d, contributed by the employees of the Smithfield Freezing Wurka. We hear that Mr Val. Wilson, who had his leg broken m two places a few days ago while loading grain at the Timaru Milling Company's siding, is progressing favourably at the hospital. It will be sometime yet, however, before he is about again, 11 I'm goin' to get a new dwess, and mother is goiu' to buy it at Davies and Murphy's." Even the toddlers know where their childish <n..ies are most energetically catere<i io and satisfied. Bring her along mother, we haye the ' dwess to suit her, and yon were never disappointed m the price. Manufacturer's samples of children's coats, some very choice m cream, fawn, electric blue, aIBO a few pelesses, price to-day 8s lid each. Davies & Murphy. [Advt.] A meeting of directors of the Albury Saleyards Company was held on Monday. A letter was read 'from Mr Herbert respectinc a charge for yarding fees on unsold stock. As the company did not charge such fees the secretary was requested to notify the auctioneer interested accordingly. Mr Hprbert was elected a director m place of Mr Cross, and Mr H. Smith m place of Mr Irving. It was resolved to continue tho monthly Bales, business being so gratifying. The people of Gleiwti are to be provided with n novel and attractive entertainment to-morrow evening by a company of amateur pipsies, about twenty strong. A mimic gipsy camp with camp fire will be fitted up, and the performers will be appropriately costumed. The •• business" has been under industrious rehearsal for three months past, and should " go" well. It is hoped that Timaru friends will attend m numbers, and conveyances will be run and refreshments provided. The proceeds are to go to the school fund. The Cameron family, who have resided for many years at Winchester, are leaving this week for a larger farm at Benmore, near Chertsey. They will carry with them the best wishes of a large circle of friends at Winchester for their future happiness and success, A member of the family recently won a considerable sum of money m a sweep, and very sensibly invested it m real estate m the shape of a nice farm, where his aged and much respected parents will find a comfortable home and have their declining years rendered brighter by the good fortune of their son. The annual company social m connection with the Timaru .Rifles, which has hitherto been held m July, will be held one month earlier. Thursday, the 22nd of June, has been set down for the social, and it promises to be a great success. The Bank street schoolroom has been engaged for the occasion and the necessary arrangements are about completed. As this social is usually largely patronised by the public, those who iatend being present would do well to secure their tickets at once, as the number is limited. Tickets may be had from the officers and non-commissioned officers. Particulars will be found m another column. A meeting of the Albury Collie Dog Club was held on Monday evening. Mr Kutherford presided, and there was a good attendance of members. The secretary presented a balance sheet of the late trial showing £25 to credit, and this added to last year's surplus gave £30 m hand. This result was deemed highly satisfactory, considering the liberal | prizes given, and the modest amount of members' subscriptions compared with many other clubs. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to all who had helped to make the trials such a great success, with a special vote to Mrs Couper for so ably attending to the refreshment department. It was agreed to suitably acknowledge the able and painstaking services of the judge and hon. secretary. The final round for Mrs Lindsay's medals was played the other day by Mr C. T. H. Perry and Mr R. Sommerville. The players were evenly matched and played a close game all the way, so that at the finish of the eighteen holes they were all square. Play was continued to the 19th hole where both balls lay within four yards of the hole, Sommerville m 5 and Perry m 7. Perry holed his long put, while Sommerville just missed it, giving Perry the match with his handicap. The following is the order of play m the mixed foursomes match which takes place on Thnrsday first :— Miss A. Buchanan, Mr D. Stewart 27; Miss A. M. Howell, Mr C. T. H. Perry 24 ; Miss K.
