ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AT WELLINGTON.

♦ Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 23. There was splendid weather for the anniversary celebration. The rain during the night laid the dust, and the day was fine, not too hot, with;.a light breeze. A great number of people went to Plimmerton and other seaside resorts. The principal festivities besides the race meeting were the swimming sports and yacht races. In the 100 Yards Swimming Championship of New Zealand seven men contested. The race was won by Edwards, of Christchurch, by a head, from Trascott, of Ohristehurch, the present champion; btokes, of Ohristchureh, third, two feet away ; others close up ; time— 69 4 sth sec. This is a record for the colony. There were only two entries m the senior yacht race, the Maritana and Waitangi. The breeze was too light at the start and the Maritana gave np. In the handicap race the same two yachts were entered, but the Maritana had a walk over. In the junior races there were good entries.
