Daring the seven years ended with last year there were 6093 applications lodged for New Zealand patents. Omitting those of last year as they had not all been dealt with, m the preceding six years there were 5000 applications made, of which no less than 2086 New Zealand and 350 foreign applications were abandoned or allowed to lapse, or were refused The* new French steam packet Nord made her first passage across the Channel on October 6th between Calais and Dover, performing the passage m 57 minutes, which is said to be the quickest recorded cross-channel passage.
