: BOMBARDMENT OF THE HAVANA FORTS. BOMBARDMENT OF MATANZAS, LANDING OF AMERICAN SAILORS AND MARINES IN CUBA. United Press Association—By Electri. Telegraph—Copyright. Received April 29th, 9.30 a.m. Washington, April 28. Three American warships bombarded Matanzas, with a view of preventing thc construction of earthworks. The bombardment lasted nearly an hour and much damage was done. The shore batteries replied but the warships were not touched. Naval experts declare that the protected cruisers belonging to Admiral Durey's squadron, which recently left Hong Kong for the Philippines are superior to the Spanish cruisers, though the Spaniards have a more numerous fleet. The American squadron bombarded the forts at the mouth of Havana harbour, doing great execution, and killing many of the garrison. Received April 29th, 10 a.m. The cruisers N ew York.Puritan and,Cin* cinnati bombarded the forts at the mouth of Havana harbour to-day. Three hundred shots were fired doing great execution. The earthworks were demolished and some guns diemantled, and many of the Spanish garrison killed. The Spaniards fired twenty-five shots in return, and did no damage. The discipline and marksmanship of the American gunners were excellent. The New York Herald reports that ZOOO marines and sailors will be landed in Cuba on Saturday, and will act in conjunction with 19,000 inaurgentß, and assisted by the fleet will make a combined attack on Havana.
