It is stated that m 1896 Zola, under an "... assumed name, paid a visit to a some- [ what notorious voyantc m Paris, and . published m the pages of Figaro a threecolumn account of what took place. The predictions of the fortune-teller read ! a little curious m the light of recent events. He was informed that a terrible J scandal would take place m two years' , time, m which he would be involved, and that m the end he would no longer be able to remain im France. It was , further foretold that a Jew would be mixed up m this affair, the effects of " which would be very labting. The death of Sir Lambert Dobson, ' Chief Justice of Tasmania, created a 1 profound impression m that colony, \ where his high character and distinguished attainments were held m the \ greatest respect. The Government ordered a State funeral, which was attended by many thousands of persona of all ranks and conditions, from His Excellency the Governor downward. In nearly all the pulpits eulogistic tributes ' were paid to the memory of the deceased. ( At the Roman Catholic Church the Rev. , T. T. Welsh said the deceased was not . a member of the Catholic Church, but ( he lived up to the standard of a Christian man, and won very general, indeed uni- , versa), respect m the colony for his public and private character, and was widely esteemed' beyond this colony— even m England. No one absolutely knew the state of a soul after death, and he asked ■ the congregation, during mass, to pray for the soul of Sir Lambert Dobson.
