The gathering was a very hearty one, and there is sure 1 to be many of those who were present, who will give Mr Johnston a good hearty send off this afternoon. A very interesting and closely contested match took place on the Timaru High School grounds on Saturday, between the tennis clubs of the Waitaki and Tiirara Girls' High Schools. About forty visitors arrived from Oamaru, ac- , companied by two mistresses, and they were entertained at luncheon and after- ? noon tea by the pupils and staff of the , girls' school. The play resulted m a win for the Timaru school by 22 points, time being equally divided between , doubles and singles. Several parents [ were present to show their interest m the match. At the Salvation Army barracks on Monday, at which there was a fair attendance, the visiting officer, Adjutant iishop, during the meeting, presented the Timaru corps with " new colours," subscribed for by the soldiers and a few friends. A summoned meeting of the Juvenile Foresters was held on Monday, Bro. Mahan, S.C.R., presiding. -The election of officers resulted as follows :— C.R., Bro. Mahan ; S.C.R., Bro. King; Secretary, Bro. J. Tubb (re-elected) ; Minute Secretary, Bro. Evans ; treasurer, Bro. Harris (re-elected); S.W., Bro, T. Tubb; J. W., Bro. Griffiths ; 5.8., Bro. Seymour ; J. 8., Bro. W. Thomson. The social was fixed to take place on April 22nd. One person was proposed for membership. The receipts for the evening were £2 183, Everything possible is being done to make the annual sports m connection with the Pleasant Point Library a greater success this year than ever. The Domain Board have granted the use of the Park and intend to spend £10 m clearing a track for races, etc. There will be about ten events (exclusive of trotting races, which are to be arranged separately), consisting of flat races, obstacle races, quoit matches, etc. Tenders are to be called for refreshment booths, and the School Committee is to be asked to grant a holiday to the children. A successful entertainment m aid of the Fairlie fife and drum band was held at the Public Hall last Friday evening, and was well attended. The first half of the programme was filled by the cantata "The Ruler's Daughter," well gone through under the leadership of Mr F. Langridge, reflecting credit on that gentleman's tuition. The following singers took part :— Mesdames Watson, W. Young, Langridge, and Fraser; Misses Foden and N.'Gilmour; and Messrs Yates, Fraser, Langridge and Avison. Miss Kernahan did good service as accompanist. The second part consisted of a concert programme, of which Mrs Fraser played the overture, and the singers were Mesdames Langridge, Watson, Young, Fiaser, Miss Kernahan, Messrs Calder, Fraser, Yates, W. Young and Avison. Refreshments were provided by the ladies, and a dance followed the concert. Altogether the evening's entertainment was a pleasant one, and the funds of the band should benefit considerably from the proceeds. The band has now been m existence about : velve months numbers eighteen m(i hers, and m tin hands of Mr Langridge is making notice able progress. Several times at Monday's meeting of the Borough Council the new readinj of the Standing Orders gave rise tc amusing scenes. Councillor Macintosl: had scarcely begun his remarks intro ductory to his first motion when anothei Councillor sharply demanded : " Is hi speaking to any resolution ?" and beinp told that he was, he inquired what i< was. "He is right m speaking before he moves it, according to the Council* solicitor," the Mayor explained. Late] on the conservative Councillor wrott out an amendment, signed it, and senl it up to the Mayor, got up to explain it and was promptly stopped.
