Mr Garner, theatrical manager, has been awarded £1500 damages against Mr McCarthy, an American actor,, for breach of agreement. They conjointly undertook a theatrical season m Australia. After Mr Garner had gone to heavy expenses m forming a company and engaging a theatre Mr McCarthy backed out of the engagement and joined another company. THE INDIAN FAMINE RELIEF FUND. Advices from Fiji state that the appeal for contributions to the Indian famine relief fund is receiving a liberal response. Eleven hundred pounds has already been subscribed, principally by Indian coolies. THE BARQUE OREGON. In connection with a cable from Wellington m reference to a supposed wreck at Samoa, it has been ascertained that while the barque Oregon was on ihe voyage from San Francisco to Sydney m January she was struck by a hurricane m the vicinity of Samoa and lost part of her cargo of timber, which was marked 8.8.8. THE CABLE INTERRUPTION: Melbourne, March 27. There is a disposition m some quarters to connect the cable interruption with the Cretan troubles, but the cable authorities consider that there is not the slightest ground for the/ supposition. They explain that the two cables which have given way are a considerable distance south of the seat of the disturbance, and that European warships are patroling the. neighbouring seas to prevent acts of aggression. The two lines between Malta and Alexandria have never previously been interrupted simultaneously, and it is surmised that the present break is the result of local submarine disturbance. ' The delay on messages is the outcome of overwork on the remaining lines.
