It is only as members of the. rescue party recover from the effects of the poisonous gas that anything like an idea of the work performed can be obtained. One man named Dryly displayed conspicuous bravery. No less than six times did the brave fellow rush into the death-dealing atmosphere and return alive. Some comrades, when called upon, also fearlessly entered the workings but returned no more. The sensation caused by the gaß is terrible. Dryly describes it as affecting the legs with a ' Bensation of momentarily increasing weight, with inability to run. Theportiona of the Stockton pit from which the fatal gases escaped have been walled off, preparatory to resuming work. ■ ■ " *
