The Agg, says :that though the local money market is fully supplied, and there is a satisfactory improvement and demand, suggestive of a return of confidence, it is strange that while outsiders interested m Australia's financial position are incline*! to take a more hopei ful view of the future, m England there should be a most marked feeling of doubt as to how success will ■ l utyy gqlve the difficult problem of settleing with foreign creditors. There is already a slight indication on the part of .the latter not to press their claims too urgently, and a disposition on this side to obtain concessions, wiiich if granted will m time have a material influence pn the future of the colony. It seems to be

generally acknowledged, that with the low prices of produce ruling, the colony cannot afford to pay the same rate of m" terest for private borrowings as when wheat land yielded a better return. Wheat is quqtedat 2slld. Very little busines is doing, holders being very strong m their ideas of price. Flour, roller-made, £7 10s. Oats, Algerian, Is 6d to Is 7d ; stout white, Is lOd to Is lid. The supplies of tea thus far to hand show a decrease of 45,000 half-chests, as compared with the corresponding period of 1894. The market is clear of finest teas, and common sorts are both short of supply and dear. Under date 30th April, the English agricultural correspondent of the Auckland Herald writes:— "At last the fact that the plethora m the wheat supply is coming to an end for a time is beginning to be recognised. During the past week there has been a steady advance m American markets, aud m this country the price is 6d to Is a quarter more than it was a week ago. It is my firm opinion that this is only the beginning of a rise in' values which will become considerable before the end of the cereal year. There is nothing known at present to prevent it. Russia and Roumania may have good crops ; but m Europe as a whole the present indications are for a production below the average, the acreage certainly being contracted, while the I condition is not up to a fair standard on I the whole, and there is no promise of a great surplus m any distant country. Barley and oats have both shared m the recent advance."
