FOOTBALL.

The Geraldine Football Club opened the season on Thursday m a paddock kindly granted to them by Mr H. B. Webster, the match being Captain v. Vice-Captain. The Captain's side won. STAR Ist V. WAIHI 2nd. The above clubs met for the first time this season on the Waihi ground, Winchester. The weather was lovely and the ground m splendid condition. The attendance was small but those who were present enjoyed the game immensely. Mr E. Rice, of Timaru, carried the referee's whistle, and his decisions gave the utmost satisfaction. At 3.45 Waihi kicked on" with a glaring sun m their faces, and from the start the Star made things extremely lively. The visitors carried the ball well down the ground, but by a fine rush the Waihi regained the lost ground and from a free kick Dick Austin picked a beautiful goal for Waihi. From this time till the end of the first spell Waihi were kept on the defensive, and only saved themselves by forcing down several times m succession. Oborn showed up with a fine run, and was thrown by a Waihi player with rather unnecessary force. Fox gained a mark right m front of the Waihi goal, but Newton missed the kick badly. Another free kick was gained by the Star, and a second easy kick was badly mulled. In the second spell the Waihi men made a better fight of it, but the ball was m their 25 for the greater part of the time. Dick Austin made a splendid dribble for Waihi, but did not quite reach the Star lines. The Star players soon worked the ball back again, but m spite of their superior play they did not succeed m scoring, several good chances being lost by kicking too hard m the Waihi's 25, and the game resulted m Waihi winning by 3 points (one penalty goal), the Star nil. The game was a disappointing one for the visitors, as the luck seemed all against them. For the winners Dick Austin played a fine game, whilst for the losers Fox, Oborn. W.Strachan, andLarkin did good service)
