The election for the vacancy for West Edinburgh, caused by Viscount AValner succeeding Earl Selbome took place today, and resulted m the return of Mr Mclvor, the Unionist candidate, who defeated Mr Elibank, Liberal, by 703 votes. THE HON. J. G. WARD. The governor of the Bank of England bears public testimony to Mr Ward's financial ability, and says that his good judgment has assisted New Zealand to regain a position of first class credit on the London money market. PERSONAL. The Westminster Gazette says Mr R. C. Munro Ferguson, M.P., is admirably equipped for the position of Governor of one of the Australian colonies, while the seat is safe for his party m the evenjt of his resignation. COLONIAL JUDGES. News has reached here that the British Vice-Consul m Jeddah, one of the principal trading centres m Arabia, was attacked by Bedouins and killed. The British, French, and Italian Consuls were also attacked, but although severely wounded they escaped with their lives. After several months sojourn at Hiroshima the Mikado has returned to the Imperial residence m Tokio, the capital.
