BURNSIDE MARKETS.

DUNEDIN, May 29. CATTLE. Only 91 head of fat cattle were yarded, the greater portion being scraggy cows and half-fat steers. Competition was fairly active tor best quality, which brought slightly higher prices compared with last week's weights. Best bullocks brought £8 to £9, medium £6 7s6d to £7 15s, light weights £5 5s to £6 ss, best i-ows £5 17b 6d to £6 15s, medium £4 10s to £5 15s, light and aged £2 15s to £4 7s 6d. SHEEP. 1269 fat sheep were penned, all crossbreds. With the assistance of a buyer for export the market displayed a more lively tone, more 1 especially m respect to operations m best sheep, whilst aged ewes were neglected. Best crossbred wethers brought 10s to 11s 6d, medium to good 6s 6d to 9s 6d, best do. ewes (young) 8s 6d to 9s 6d, medium to good 68 3d to Bs, inferior and light 4s 6d to 5s 6d. FIGS. 130 pigs were penned, the greater por tion suckers and light sorts, with a few porkers and baconers, which again met witb a dull market, suckers being hard to place at any price. A number were | turned out for which no offer could be got. Those sold brought 3s to Bs, slips 9s 6d to 10s 6d, stores 15s to 17s, porkers 18s to 20s, baconers 27s 6d to 38s, a few extra heavy sows 41s to 44s each. GRAIN. Wheat.— A quiet but steady demand continues. The market is very firm with a further advance m price. The quantity offering is still limited ; very little is coming to hand, and with hardly any m store the situation has caused millers a little uneasiness, but now having pretty full supplies on hand they are not quite so eager to purchase even moderate lines at quoted prices. At the same time the few small lots offered at auction from time to time are apparently for a purpose run up to the highest pitch possible, though these fancy prices will be somewhat difficult to maintain, unless a very substantial rise takes place at Home. Quotations for prime milling 3s 6d to 3s Bd, extra prime and clean for seed 3s 9d to 4s lid, medium to good 3s 3d to3s6d, inferior to medium 2s lOd to 3s 2d (ex store, sacks weighed m; terms). Oats.— The market manifests a slightly better tone, and with an increased demand prices for best feed and milling show a slight advance compared with those of the previous week. Inferior to medium quality also shows a small advance, though not to the same extent. There are fewer now offering, and this doubtless is the cause of the improvement which is likely to be maintained. Quotations for prime stout bright milling are Is 4£d to Is sd, medium Is 3£d to Is 4d, best bright stout feed Is 3£d to Is 4d, good to best Is 2£d to Is 3d, inferior to medium Is l£d to Is 2d (ex store, sacks extra: net). Barley. — There is no improvement to note. The bulk of the offerings are off colour and a lot is unfit for malting. Such samples have no attention whatever. At the moment quotations for prime malting are2s6d to 2s 9d, medium to good 2s to 2s 3d, inferior Is 6d to Is 9d (ex store, sacks extra ; net).
