Jonas and M. Gray, J.P's., dealt with two cases on the charge sheet yesterday. A young man under remand was further remanded for medical treatment, and a woman was bound over to good behaviour for six months. The town clock was set going again yesterday. "We gather that the political pressure bravado has leaked away from the minds of some of the Borough Councillors, and the late regulator has been asked to keep the clock goingtill thenext meeting of the Council. An unoccupied three-roomed cottage m Oxford street, SoutKerton, belonging to Mrs D Kelly of Gleniti, was destroyed by fire at 1 o'clock yesterday mo2'ning. It had not been long empty, a tenant having moved into a house next door a day or two ago. It was insured for £50. JJAt the Wesleyan Church to-morrow the Key. D. J. Murray, of Waimate, will preach at 11 and 6.30. As it is now some [ months since Mr Murray was able to pay | one of his acceptable visits to the Timaru Church, he will no doubt be welcomed by large congregations. Mr Murray will preach at Kingßdown at 3 o'clock m the afternoon. The trophy presented to the Timaru Rifles by Mr John Jackson was fired for last week and was won by Private Stevens who made 28 points at 500 yds, 21 at 600 and had 7 points handicap ; total 56 points. Mr J. Hole's trophy was shot for on Wednesday last and was won by Private Wall who put on 35 at 300 yards, which added to his handicap of 3 points, made his total 38. A beautiful meteor was observed a few minutes past 11 p.m. on Thursday m the western sky. Our informant saw it from town m the direction of Mount Horrible. It seemed to burst m its fall, and a line of light marked the track of the meteor for several seconds. The original flash was so bright as to light up the observer's surroundings, Messrs Guinness and LeCren announce that they have arranged to add a general goods and produce department to their business from Ist February next, and that the new branch will be under the charge of Mr A. Crawford, a gentleman long and favourably known m commercial and agricultural circles m South Canterbury. In addition to this the new branch will undertake the sale of every kind of produce. Farmers and others should note that orders can be booked at once. A late resident of Timaru, Miss Constance M. M. B. Pearce, daughter of Mr Pearce, lately a bootmaker m Woolcombe Street, was among the first-class prize-takers of the pupils m the Dunedin School of Art, South Kensington examinations. The results were received from Home by mail on the 9th, and Miss Pearce's name is first of seven m the first class for model drawing, and sixth among ten firsts m freehand drawing. Miss Pearce had only been at the Dunedin School of Art for twelve months, and before that she had had no teaching whatever. It is not, however, surprising ~tnati slfe i Is Urst m 7 model drawing, foi whilst m Timaru she' executed some wonderfully close copies of large architectural pictures with pen and ink, these self-taught exercises giving promise oJ good future work under the influence oi proper tuition.
