The Timaru Herald. TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1895. TOWN & COUNTRY.

— — ♦ The Tourist Cycling Club meet at the Shamrock Hotel to-morrow evening at 8 o'clock to transact some very important business. All members are particulavlj requested to attend. j The sitting of the District Court which jwas to have been held to-day is to be adjourned till to-morrow at 11 a.m. Hin Honour Judge Ward will deal with some bankruptcy and probate cases. The Shag Point Coal Company announce that they are now m a position to supply first class coal from their new deep seam . The seam now being worked is over 200 feet below the old one, and as a consequence the coal is harder and firmer grained, making it a grand burning and economical coal. The stolen bicycle turned up again about 1 o'clock yesterday morning, Mr Beckingham finding it placed against the fence at his private house, Attenborough. The bicycle was covered with mud and looked as if the person who had so coolly appropriated it had taken a good day's journey out of it during the wet weather on Sunday. At the Magistrates Court yesterday before C. A. Wray, Esq, S.M., George Devereaux was brought up on remand from Friday, charged with failing to comply with an order made at the court, Winton, that he pay £4 4s and costs and 10s per week for the support of his illegitimate child. The case was further adjourned till to-day when it is expected that a settlement will be come to. Early yesterday Mr Tatani, senr., m the employ of Mr N. Dunlop, at Geraldine, was gored by a bull belonging to the latter, m a paddock, as also, Mr J. Brown, senr., who went to Ta tarn's assistance. Tatam, who was unconscious, was removed to Mr Brown's residence close by, and Dr Hislop and Mr Dunlop sent for, who found Tatam badly hurt, especially about the head. We have to thank the local agents of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company for copies of their pictorial card calendar for 1895. The calendar has the sailing dates from Plymouth printed m red, and from New Zealand m blue, and a list is given of agents at both ends of the company's business, England and Australasia, and at ports of call on the outward and homeward route.. Coloured drawings are given of the steamers Gothic and Arawa, and the whole is neatly designed and nicely coloured to serve as an office decoration. The Hobart Mercury, commenting on the report that another big loan is contemplated for public works m New Zealand, says : — "Whether the New Zealand people will resist the temptation to revert to the extravagant policy of the past or whether they will throw caution and experience to the winds for the mere sake of the temporary briskness of trade consequent on the disbursing of borrowed capital, remains to be seen. An onlooker can only contemplate with wonder the temerity with which a section of the provincial press treats the borrowing of a few more millions and the heaping up of fresh taxation as a mere playful bagatelle — a simple scoring on the slate, to be wiped off at pleasure." The usual weekly executive meeting of the New Zealand Workers' Union was held at the head office ,Waimate,on Saturday. Mr Brown was m the chair. Correspondence was received from Mr J. W. Kelly, respecting the establishment of a branch at Dunedin ; from the Hon. Major Steward about the Employers Liability Act ; and from the Government Labour Department, regarding registration under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act. The secretary was instructed to take the necessary steps m connection with this matter. From the secretary of the Gore branch, intimating that at a recent meeting of the Gore Farmers' Club it was decided" to reduce wages during the coming harvesting and threshing seasons. The secretary was instructed to warn workers not to crowd into the said district during the seasons mentioned. Correspondence was received from the branches at Dunedin, Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, Ghristchiirch, Winton and Tapanui, reporting progress. After dealing with a large amount of correspondence from various station representatives the meeting ended. SYNOPSIS OF ADVERTISEMENTS.
