THE NEW SOUTH WALES FISHERIES.
Sydney, January 12. The Fisheries Commission has laid before the Government an important memorandum on the fisheries of the colony. It states that the colony is actually importing fish food to the value of over £100,000 per annum, despite the frequently reiterated assertion that our 3eas literally swarm with fish of great variety. The Commission recommends ihat m order to prosecute enquiry into ;he important subject of deep sea isheries and carry the investigations to l successful issue, it is absolutely lecessary that a thorough and systemitic exploration, by means of a iompletely equipped steam trawling vessel, be made of the several fishing [rounds close to the shore lino. The >oats should be fitted with well?; m trder to bring the fish alive to market, t is estimated that it would cost £6000 o make the experiment. THE WAKATIPU. January 13. The Government have decided to con tinue the present mail contract via Torres Straits for six months only, m order tc give time for the full consideration oJ details with regard to the frozen meal and dairy produce requirements, whieli it is proposed should be provided for it the new contract. POSTAL CONFERENCE. Hobaet, January 12. The Hon. Mr Ward has cabled to the Hon. P. O. Fysh, asking him to arrangt the Victorian Government to call the Postal Conference for February Ist, and m Hobart instead of Melbourne. The Hon. Mr Fysh is negotiating with the Victorian Government on the question.
