The majority of shareholders m the New Zealand River Plate Land Mortgage Co. voted m favour of the appointment of an independent auditor and abolishing the office of managing director. Mr H. G. Bristow, one of the directors, demanded a poll, thereupon the bulk of the shareholders left the room before business was finished, declaring that the , directors would force a large majority by . means of proxies held by them. The meeting adopted the accounts after the • withdrawal of an amendment proposing that a committee be set up, and also sanctioned the reduction of capital to £9 per share. i The Union Bank of Australia has declared a dividend of 6 per cent., and carried forward £14,000. At a meeting of the South Eastern Railway Company's shareholders, Sir G. Eussell said that Mr Eddy's claim to t be appointed rested on a tale of musty [ testimonials and Australian not English I experience. It would be the height of x folly and almost criminal insanity to elect him. Mr Eddy's friends at the meeting repudiated the aspersions upon him, and declared that he was an able 1 and reliable man who had been thrice 1 tried successfully. The meeting unanimously passed a vote of confidence m the directors and Sir Myles Fenton, the 3 general manager. January 11. The Tiiries, commenting on the action ' of the South Eastern Railway Company, says that Sir G. Russell did not give sufficient credit to Mr Eddy.
