A TERRIFIC FIGHT.

An extraordinary fight is reportec from Caulfield as having taken plac< between the two well-known raeehorsei Selim and Forward, who managed to ge away from their attendants. Accordinj to the published accounts they fough like demons. Selim at first seemed tr show the most cunning and determina tion as he got his head under Forward 1 ! chest and tossed him over two or thrc< times, but by-and-bye he tired, and thei Forward had-a turn. He knocked hii opponent about considerably getting hiir down several times and kicking hirr severely. They bit each other about tin neck arid withers, and when the batth had proceeded for some time each waf covered with blood. The ground al round was ploughrd up, and at times the combatants were almost bidder m the clouds of dust raised. Af they charged each other they fa'irlj roared. The efforts of Brewer, their trainer, and his boys, to separate the combatants were for a considerable timt futile. As soon as they were approached they would gallop away locked together, and m a hundred yards or so resume th« fight. At one time they got up againsi a wire fence, and Forward, getting his hind leg entangled m it, received a nas,ty flesh wound. It was over halfanhoui before the stallions could be separated and secured. Towards the finish Forward proved his superiority, Selim, though the bigger horse, being well beaten. On being taken home*both horses were m a bad state. There were m such an exhausted condition that they could scarcely stand. Selim, m particular, was very much the worse for wear. His skin was broken m a dozen different places. Forward's teeth-marks covered his shoulder, his chest had a nasty wound on it, his near stifle was badly cut, and his off hip had a severe wound on it. His hind legs were also badly swollen, and altogether the horse presented a pitiable appearance. Forward bore more teeth marks than Selim, but his other injuries were not so serious. The wire fence had cut his near hind leg, which was swollen from hock to fetlock, and there were also several abrasions about the body. It will probably be a couple of months before Selim will be able to appear on the training track. Forward was more fortunate, and with ordinary luck he will be able to make his appearance on the training track m two or three weeks.
