GERALDINE BPETNG MBEIING.

Judge-Mr M 0 Studkolme ; starter— Mr H Pipe/ ; handieapper-^-Mr (Jeo Dowse ; clerk of the oourse— Mr A L Barker ; clerk of the scales— Mr B H Pcarpoint ; honorary secretary— Mr B B Macdonald. The spring meeting of the Geraldine Baoing Olub was begun on their oourse at thd Orari yesterday, ihe weather was very enjoyable, the threatened rain holding off, and a cloudy sky making things very cool and pleasant, 'ihe attendance wai good, muoh better we thought than for many years ; the special train from Timaru being well patronised, and local resident;, especially the members of the fair sex, mustered m good foror. The track looked very well, young grats | coming away nicely ; and we noticed many minor improvements to buildings, fenceß, etc , which conduced to comfort and success. The totalisator was managed by Messrs Mason and Sobers, m their usual effioient manner, the sum of £1112 passing through during the day. Buyers of privileges apparently did well, and the various officials of the club worked m that quiet enthusiastic way that that always commands snecess. The racing was taken all through, fairly interesting, and tha dividends, though small for the greater part, wora m keeping with the small fields. Ihe withdrawal of The Arbiter, caused a rush to set m on Lord Zetland for the first raoe, and he started a very hot favourite. He got homo all right, but Fire King made a great fight of it, and only suffered defeat by very little. In the Selling Bace the stable companions were struggling for supremacy a furlong for home, but the heavily backed one had m the end to give way to the old slave, who won very comfortably. Tho Cup wai a disappointing race, for Boaehill who on passing the stand was nearly pulling the boy out of the saddle, dropped hopelessly back at the half distanoe, and the Ascot hone being taken through at tix furlongs, ran on with a big heart and won easily from Barmby, the boy flogging away on the winner to the end. The Trot was the utual helter nkeltsr, the winner turning up m Lily, who had a liberal handicap, carried the bulk of the money, and won easily. In the Flying Handicap Lady Zetland was asked to concede a lot of weight, but at the straining point was not found wanting, for ifirrington could not live with her to the finish. Jack got a double bracket on annexing the Post Btake», and was sold for a good figure ; while the Belfield Handioap was carried off handsomely by Fire King. The starting through* out the day was excellent — m a couple of races a perfeot treat, but Mr Dowse had not hidden the winners bo cleverly as usual, Among a hard working lot of officers Mr B B Macdonald as hon. secretary for the first time was the very man for such a responsible and onerous post- We have to cordially thank him for valuable assistance. With fins weather to-day the meeting should again be good, and we cordially trust that a finanoial success will be the reward of the old club. The following aro details of the raoing: — Sqttattees Handicap (a district raco), of £30; second, £3 ; 1 mile. 74 Mr M Hobbß' b g Lord Z 3 tland, by Perkin Warbeck ll— Forget-Me-Not, 6yrs, 9stßlb ...
