Settlers' houses were blown down and great damage waa done to the crops, A SCHOONER FLOATED OFF., News from Noumea reportß that the Bchooner Julia, which went ashore at the entrance to the harbour there early m the month, has been floated. The Julia at the time of the accident was on a voyage from Loyalty Island to Noumea with a full cargo of copra. WOMEN "MURDERERS. , • Melbourne, September 27. Mrs Needles has been convicted on a charge of poisoning her husband and childreo, and sentenced to death. Mrs Venneli has been arrested on a charge of murdering her children. A STRANGE TRANSACTION. Mr Bent, ex-Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, declares that the labourer MeMahon waß fully aware of the nature of the transfer of the shares m the Australian City and Suburban Investment Banking Company when he signed the document. McMahon, who is responsible for £4000, seeks to have his name removed from the list of contributors, and his application will be beard to-morrow, when Mr Bent will be examined.
