FAIRLIE ATHLETIC CLUB.

A very sucoeßsful oonoert and melo dramatic entertainment was held at the schoolroom, Fdirlie, on Friday night last woek, m aid of I the Athletio Club, a very numerous audienoe 3 boiog present. Mr A H MoLean presided , Ihe room was very tastefully decorated with evergreens, flowers and flags, the stage looking | very effeotive, and great credit is due to tbe , local scenic aitiet for the resulb obtained. A programme of high claea mueio and tonga was 3 ably rendered by the various performers, the i thanks of the olub being especially due to i those who oatne from a distance to assist. Tha , concert programme was opened with a spirited ! overture played as a duet on tbe piano by Mjss E Gillingham and Mr Figott. Miss Gooch [ sang " The Old Lock" m a very pleasant \ manner. The next item was a dust "When t, the Wind blows m from the Bea," sung by Mr and Mrs George Hamilton ;it waa muoh I appreciated and gained a well merited , encore, the performers responding by singing 9 " Sylvia," m a manner whioh narrowly x escaped a further encore. Mr Mnesen fol--1 lowed with " White Wings," aud m demand j to a vGoiferous eDoore gave " Sailing." Mrs B Herbert Smith sang m her well known ! style " Qaeen of tbe Berth," and roj sponded to an nnanimoua encore with j « Lißtening." " Father O'fflynn" effectively B sung by Mr Talbot participated ia the c samp honour. Mistletoe Bough," irresistibly , and reiponded by rendering " Home Sweat Home," very sweetly. The seoond portion of the concert wa» opened by Mr Flavell, who sang the comio song "He was a Gnreful Man," m an offec* (tive manner, and repeated the last verao m raaponte to tbe demands of the audienoe. "Kate O'Shane," «ung by Mw H Smith, was i considered the gem of the evenirig, and the unanimous recall was replied to by tbat lady repeating the last verso of the song. Mr Frank Smith varied the proceedings at this stage by & well rendend original rcoication entitled " The Experiences of a Bouseabout," creating muoh amusement, and gaining t recall. Mr J Gow's fine baritone waa heard to great advantage and was highly appreciated m<' The Heather Hills." Miss Hassell again delighted the audience by her tasteful render* ing of "The Oaotle Gate," for whioh she reoeived well deserved recognition. Mr Mugsen's "Daisy Bell," ooccluded a lengthy programme, and detpito the la^eneas of the hour the audienoe showed their, appreciation of the singer's efforts by a decided recall. Tbe concert programmes m each part were j concluded with a, melodrama, m which >a number of local amateurs took part. The! staging of these wes moat complete, and effretive, no details beiug omitted, the general effect ihowing that no paios had been spared m the preparation of seenory, dreseea, and effects.- • {Che plays were brightly written and were acted throughout with muoh spirit Numerous local allusions were introduced whioh provoked plenty of amusement. In the words of the programme they were " vivid pjoturea of every day domestio life, comprising a outlas combat m eaoh act, and numoroua horrible detths at appropriate intervale." Tho entertainment oonoluded with a Jacce, and altogether waa a most enjoyable one, and great credit is due to the preiident of the Athletio Club, Mr J. D. Hamilton, for the manner m which he worked the matter up. The proceeds go to the bazaar fnnds of the clab, and a substantial sum Kill be available for handing over.
